My name is Kayleigh, I am 31 years old. I am the mother of two beautiful boys aged 10 and 7, and the fiancee of the most amazing man a girl could ask for :)
I currently work as a mental health support worker.
I am also the daughter of a mother diagnosed with Schizophrenia and Manic Depression, which has (and still continues) to impact upon my life in several ways. Sometimes it feels as though it's a battle to not let this define me.
I am a Psychology graduate and I conducted my research on the topic of growing up with a mother who experiences psychosis. In doing so, I realised that I wasn't alone in having not received any help or support, and that for some, it was the first time they had spoken about it. For these reasons, I decided that something needs to be done about it and I created this forum. I feel very passionate about putting an end to the silence, to share my own experiences and provide a safe space for others to do the same. I want myself and others to have the freedom to say "this happened to me and it's not OK". We should no longer be ignored, forgotten about and afraid to stand up and say who we are and where we came from.
By joining me, you will be able to speak openly and honestly about your experiences and listen to other's in a place that is safe, inclusive, welcoming, non-judgemental and respectful. Feel less alone and find your place in a community that understands you, be supportive and supported.
Together we can share our ideas, thoughts, feelings and opinions, raise awareness and be a part of the change we want to see in the world.
Share knowledge and information, discuss the things that are important to you.
Work towards acceptance, understanding, and personal growth. Be empowered and Be You!
Thank you to those of you who have already joined me on this new venture and shared your experiences, and thank you to those who are thinking that they can do it too.
Thank you to my Fiance for more love, support and encouragement than I could ever have imagined. For being there always, for loving me even when I couldn't love myself. For being both my partner and my best friend. I wouldn't have made it this far without you.
Thank you to my children, for giving me purpose and reason to keep going when it seemed easier to give up. I am thankful for the privilege of being your mum.
